LSU SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA REPERTORY AND CONCERT DATES

The LSU Symphony Orchestra’s performance schedule for Fall 2011 offers works from Mozart, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Ravel, Debussy to Sibelius, Copland, Bruce Broughton and LSU’s own Dinos Constantinides, an LSU Boyd Professor.

Conductor Carlos Riazuelo will lead the orchestra and featured artists include LSU School of Music Faculty members Michael Gurt, Joseph Skillen, Katherine Kemler, Johanna Cox, Brian Shaw, Michael Borowitz and Dennis Jesse, guest violinist Yova Milanova and DMA conducting candidates Jovan Zivkovic and Raul Gomez.

Concert for Monday, September 12

The first concert on Monday, September 12, the program includes the Mozart Symphony No. 35 (Haffner), Dinos Constantinides concerto for piano and orchestra, Debussy Nocturnes (Nuages, Fêtes) and Ravel "Tzigane", concert rhapsody for violin and orchestra. Soloists are Michael Gurt, piano, and guest Yova Milanova, violin.

Concert for Tuesday, October 4

The program for Tuesday, October 4 includes "Appalachian Spring Suite" by Copland (conducted by Jovan Zivkovic), Bruce Broughton’s “Concerto for Tuba and Orchestra” featuring Joseph Skillen, of the LSU music faculty, and Symphony No. 2 by Sibelius.

Concert for Wednesday, October 26

On Wednesday, October 26, the LSU Philharmonia takes the stage at the School of Music Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. The program includes Brahms Variations on a Theme by Haydn (conducted by Raul Gomez), Capricorn Concerto by Barber featuring LSU Faculty Katherine Kemler, flute, Johanna Cox, oboe and Brian Shaw, trumpet, and Mendelssohn Symphony No. 4 "Italian".

This concert is free.

Final concert, Friday November 18

The final concert of the Fall semester is set for Friday, November 18. Michael Borowitz takes over as guest conductor, with LSU music faculty member Dennis Jesse, baritone. Program includes Symphony No. 2 (Romantic) by Howard Hanson, Verdi’s Overtures to Luisa Miller and La Traviata, and some of the most famous Verdi's arias for baritone: "É sogno, o realtá?" from Falstaff, "Il balen del suo sorriso" from Il Trovatore (Verdi), "C'est mon jour, mon jour suprème" from Don Carlos and "Credo in un Dio crudel" from Otello.

The LSU Symphony Orchestra is a major performing ensemble at the School of Music. Its repertoire encompasses established masterworks in orchestral literature from the Baroque to the twentieth century as well as works by contemporary composers. Recent concert seasons have included compositions such as Adams's The Chairman Dances, Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No.3, Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique, Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Brahms’ Symphony No. 2, and Elgar’s Enigma Variations, etc. Each academic year the Symphony Orchestra performs an average of five plus concerts in the LSU Union Theater, and it collaborates with distinguished guest artists as well as LSU School of Music faculty soloists on a regular basis. Its membership of 90 players represents some of LSU’s most talented student musicians who are from 25 states in the nation as well as from 15 foreign countries.
