Clarinet Choir to perform at LMEA
The LSU Clarinet Choir will be performing at the 2009 LMEA Conference on Sunday, November 22nd at 12:00pm. Directed by Robert DiLutis the choir will be presenting a workshop and recital demonstrating literature and arranging techniques for this group. The event will be held at the Crown Plaza in Baton Rouge, LA



LSU Places Winners at the MTNA Collegiate Young Artist Competition
On Saturday October 17, 2009, LSU placed winners in all categories of the MTNA Collegiate Young Artist Competition for the state of Louisiana at the University of LA at Lafayette. Andrew Larson (tuba), doctoral student of LSU Professor of Tuba Joe Skillen, won first place in the brass area; Kostadin Dyulgerski (viola), master of music student of LSU Assistant Professor of Viola Matthew Daline, won first place in the string area; and Emily Zirlin (flute), bachelor of music student of Charles and Mary Barré Alumni Professor of Flute Katherine Kemler, won first place in the woodwind area. These students will all compete on Jan. 9, 2010 at the South Central Division MTNA competition to be held in Shreveport at Centenary College. The South Central Division includes the states of LA, TX, AR, and OK. Also competing will be LSU freshman Sarah Rushing (piano), student of Barineau Professor of Keyboard Studies Willis Delony, who was the winner of the MTNA Senior competition in piano. Kristen Puster (flute), bachelor of music student of Katherine Kemler was the alternate winner in the collegiate competition in woodwinds.

LSU Grad Students Winners at District MET Opera Competition
Several LSU graduate students in vocal performance were recent winners at the District level Metropolitan Opera Competition. The winning singers included: Jin Hin Yap (Master of Music student of Kirkpatrick Professor of Voice Robert Grayson), Terrance Brown (Doctor of Musical Arts student of McMullan Distinguished Professor in Music Lori Bade), and Maria Thomas (Master of Music student of Assistant Professor of Voice Dennis Jesse). All three will advance to the Regional competition to be held at Loyola University in New Orleans in January 2010.


Student Winner at the Nationwide "Young Organist Virtuosi" Competition
LSU student Jacob Benda (Master of Music student of Mattax Professor of Organ, Herndon Spillman) was one of two students chosen as winners of the nationwide "Young Organist Virtuosi" competition. As a result of his win, Benda will present recitals at Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT in February of 2010 as well as a recital in Seattle, WA in March of 2010 as part of the "Young Organist Virtuosi" festival.



Alum Debuts at Deutsche Oper in Berlin
This November Daniela Mack (BM 04, MM 06) debuted the role of Cherubino at Deutsche Oper in Berlin. With a busy performing year ahead of her, Daniela is next scheduled to perform in Edmonton, New York, Omaha, and San Francisco early next year.



Hong Kong Juvenile and Youth Chinese Classical Orchestra to Perform
LSU is pleased to sponsor the Hong Kong Juvenile and Youth Chinese Classical Orchestra who will be performing at the LSU School of Music on Monday February 15th, 4:00 PM. The performance will be advertised to area youth orchestras and school children. After the concert, the LSU School of Music will also host a jambalaya dinner.



Students Honored in Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities 2009-2010.
The LSU A Cappella Choir was one of only three college-university choirs nationwide to appear on the final program of the American Choral Directors Association Annual Meeting in Los Angeles, February 5, 2005. The concert, often referred to as "the Rose Bowl of choral music," took place in the new Walt Disney Center for the Performing Arts.
