"....the LSU A Cappella choir was in a class of its own. They performed music of unusual difficulty and challenge, and they sang beautifully....(They) might well qualify to be ranked as 'a state treasure'."

Under the baton of Kenneth Fulton, the LSU A Cappella Choir has achieved national and international prominence. In the past decade, the chorus has performed in many of the most prestigious and well-known performance venues in the world. In 1998, the choir was invited to perform Mozart's Requiem with the LSU Symphony Orchestra for the Southern Division ACDA in Charleston, SC. During their 1997 European tour, they performed in the famed Mozarteum in Salzburg and in the Vatican. They gave invitational performances to standing ovations in March, 1995 in both the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the DAR Constitution Hall at the national convention of the American Choral Directors Association in Washington, D.C. and in June, 1994, they sang the featured concert of the 50th anniversary celebrations of D-Day at St. Mary's Cathedral in Southhampton, England. The chorus has also toured and performed in England, Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Wales, and Scotland as well as the southwestern, south, and southeastern United States. They have given two earlier invitational performances before the American Choral Directors Association Southern Division (Birmingham in 1991 and Knoxville in 1994), as well as performances for the Louisiana Music Educators Association, the American Society of University Composers, the College Music Society, and the American Musicological Society. They have received invitations to perform in Russia, South America, Israel, Bulgaria, and Italy.

The chorus is chosen each year from the LSU student population and remains a representative cross section of LSU with majors and non-majors as well as both graduate and undergraduate students. Recent members of the choir have been named Rhoades and Fulbright Scholars. Some graduates hold teaching positions representing all levels of education in eleven different states. In addition, many are now studying in prestigious graduate programs throughout the United States as well as performing with major opera companies throughout the world including the Metropolitan Opera, the New York Opera, Vienna Staatsoper, La Scala, Munich, Antwerp, Paris Opera, the Chicago Lyric, and the Houston Opera.

The group retains, as its primary goal, performance of great choral masterpieces from all musical epochs as well as varying cultural and ethnic sources. The chorus has become recognized for the ingenuity and creativeness of their programming as well as the expressive and artistic presentation of that literature which is programmed. This group performs regularly with the Louisiana Sinfonietta.

The Chamber Singers have given invitational performances for the Louisiana Music Educators' Association, the American Choral Directors' Association, the American Musicological Society, and the Society of Composers, Inc. The Chamber Singers participate annually in the LSU Festival of Contemporary Music and have premiered several works by composers such as Jacob Druckman and Bernard Rands for the Festival and for other professional organizations.

Musica Sacra et Profana, established in 1989, is an annual concert by the Chamber Singers featuring exploratory performances of choral compositions that are little-known masterpieces from all musical epochs, particularly the 20th century.

The singers, chosen each year from the LSU student population, are a representative cross-section of LSU students, including both music majors and non-majors as well as both undergraduate and graduate students.

Gospel Choir/Ebony Renaissance Chorale

These unique music organizations are comprised of men and women from all academic disciplines within the university. They are non-sectarian courses in African American culture designed to examine black art songs, spirituals, and gospel music. The focus is on the music's unique features, interpretation and performance practices, all culminating in preparation for public concerts. The LSU Gospel choir was formed in 1978, admitting students without auditioning, however, students are required to audition for Ebony Renaissance, formed in 1990 by Everrett Gordon Parker. Between both choruses a wide variety of music, written and arranged by African-Americans, is rehearsed and performed in the authentic style. Aside from the regular concert series, both groups are in demand statewide for public, private and corporate events. Together, the choirs are part of a component that expands the school's musical offering and increases the opportunities for diversity of music exposure and expression across the university community. In 1996 the LSU Gospel Choirs toured France, playing to sell out audiences in more than 5 cities, including Paris. Contact Everrett Parker for more information.
