Dr. Inessa Bazayev is Assistant Professor of Music Theory at the School of Muisc and Dramatic Arts. She reveived her PhD from the CUNY Graduate Center with a dissertation on the music of Nicolai Roslavets--one of the leading early-twentieth-century Soviet avant-garde composers. She earned a certificate in classical piano performance at the Manhattan School of Music and bachelor and master's degrees in music and English literature at Queens College (CUNY).
Dr. Bazayev has presented at numerous national and international conferences. Her interests include post-tonal theory, transformational theory, sonata theory, and 20th-century music. Currently, she is working on the influence of Alexander Scriabin on music of the Russian avant-garde.
Dr. Bazayev's previous teaching positions include Visiting Assiant Professor of Music Theory at the Oberlin College Conservatory, where she taught various levels of aural skills and theory classes. She also taught at the City College (CUNY), Queens College (CUNY), and the Manhattan School of Music. At the Graduate Center, she has twice served as Chair of the Graduate Students in Music (GSIM) Conference, and has developed a program supporting the study of music theory among minority undergraduates.
