LSU Opera

Dugg McDonough (Associate Professor and Director of Opera). McDonough is Associate Professor and Director of LSU Opera. For the past seventeen years, he was Director of the Temple University Opera Theater in Philadelphia, where he staged nearly fifty originally conceived productions, including five world premieres and numerous Philadelphia and East Coast premieres. In addition, he was in charge of creating, organizing and teaching the universityÕs acting curriculum for singers. Other institutions where he has directed and taught include the University of Tennessee, the University of Oklahoma, and the Shepherd School of Music of Rice University.

As a professional stage director, McDonough has staged a wide variety of operas, operettas, and musicals from Monteverdi to Sondheim for companies ranging from New York City Opera to the Taipei International Arts Festival in Taiwan. He also served for four seasons as Staff Stage Director for the New York City Opera under the leadership of Beverly Sills, and spent two summers on the production staff of the Santa Fe Opera. For two years, he was Production Manager and Artistic Consultant for the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, collaborating with notable stage directors such as Colin Graham, Frank Corsaro and Jonathan Miller. Other professional credits include Production Assistant for UNITEL's international telecast of Faust to celebrate the Lyric Opera of Chicago's silver anniversary, and lecturer and creator of performance workshops in Great Britain, Switzerland, Scandinavia, and Japan. As a writer, he has authored the stage works: Ordinary People, a new American opera with music by Robert Chumbley; The Middle of Nowhere, an original lyric theater piece in collaboration with composer Maurice Wright; and Gone With the Wind, a new dance scenario commissioned by the Atlanta Ballet.

A specialist in working with young performers, McDonough has, for the past ten years, been Co-Director of the Apprentice Artist Program of the Des Moines Metro Opera, and he has also stage directed for the Santa Fe Opera Apprentice Program, the San Diego Opera Center, the Young Artist Program of the Greater Miami (now Florida Grand) Opera, and the Education Department of the New York City Opera.

Originally from Tennessee, McDonough holds the Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from Duke University, a Master of Arts degree in Dramatic Arts from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and pursued extensive post-graduate study in theater history, dramatic literature, and stage direction for the opera at Indiana University.
