Samuel Ng
Music Theory
Samuel Ng (Assistant Professor of Music Theory) Ng holds degrees from the Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester (BM, 1996; MA, 2001; PhD, 2005). Prior to his studies in music theory in the United States, Ng studied piano with Gabriel Kwok at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, and earned licentiates in piano performance from the Royal Schools of Music (L.R.S.M) and the Trinity College (L.T.C.L). He has previously taught music theory and piano at the Eastman School of Music, the Eastman Community Music School, the Hochstein School of Music, and the St. Paul's Co-educational College in Hong Kong.
Ng’s research interests include phrase rhythm in tonal music, metric dissonance theories, music perception, and music theory pedagogy. He has presented papers at meetings of the Society for Music Theory, the Society of Music Perception and Cognition, the Music Theory Society of New York State, and Music Theory Southeast. His research has been published in Theory and Practice and his composition by Shawnee Press. Awards and grants include the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award, the George McNabb Scholarship, the Yi-Kwei Sze Scholarship, and the Alfred Mann Dissertation Award from Eastman, the Raymond N. Ball Dissertation Year Fellowship from the University of Rochester, the Li Po Chun Memorial Scholarship from the Hong Kong Government, the Patricia Carpenter Emerging Young Scholar Award from MTSNYS, and the Teacher Appreciation Award from LSU.
As a pianist and choral conductor, Ng performed regularly in chamber recitals at Eastman, and served as the music director of the Rochester Chinese Choral Society and the Rochester Chinese Christian Church. Ng and his wife, Wendy, have two young children, Elias and Charis.
