Justin
O'Dell
Clarinet
Justin O'Dell is Assistant Professor of Clarinet at Louisiana State University and principal clarinetist of the Acadiana Symphony Orchestra. He is an active soloist and chamber musician who has performed extensively in the United States, Europe, and South America.
Last year he performed several critically acclaimed concerts in Eastern Europe, including a televised recital live from the National Museum of Macedonia in the capital city, Skopje. After a recital in Germany, the Badische Neuste Nachrichten proclaimed, "O'Dell was brilliant with the contrasting registers of his instrument," and the same newspaper praised another concert, "his tonal beauty was shown at its best advantage."
This fall, Justin was featured in recitals in Bulgaria, Italy, and Brazil. In Brazil he was invited to perform at the Guarnieri International Music Festival of Goiania and teach at the Federal University of Goias (Brazil) as a guest lecturer. In October, Justin together with his Trio Sofia, won first prize with gold medal at the Mercadante International Clarinet Chamber Music Competition in Italy.
During the summer of 2006, assisted by an LSU grant, he worked with clarinetist Alessandro Carbonare in Rome. The project helped to produce a method for the use and teaching of Carbonare’s book on sound and technique.
Dr.
O'Dell earned degrees from The University of Michigan (Doctor of Music), Yale (Master of Music), Staatliche Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe, Germany, and Western Michigan University. His principal teachers are Fred Ormand, David Shifrin, Wolfgang Meyer, and Bradley Wong.
