Robert Peck
Theory

PeckRobert Peck (Associate Professor of Music Theory). Peck holds the degrees Doctor of Music and Master of Music from Indiana University-Bloomington, and the Bachelor of Music from Indiana University at South Bend. He has served previously on the music faculties of Indiana University, Bloomington and South Bend, and Louisiana Tech University. His research interests include transformational theory, twentieth-century music analysis, and interdisciplinary studies in mathematics and music. He has written articles for Journal of Music Theory, Perspectives of New Music, Intégral, Music Theory Online, New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, Women and Music in America Since 1900 (selected as a top reference book in Library Journal), and other publications. His current research projects include an invited book chapter on the string quartets of Shulamit Ran, and a monograph on group-theoretical aspects in music theory.

Peck has presented research at national meetings of several professional societies, including the Society for Music Theory, College Music Society, American Mathematical Society, and Mathematical Association of America, as well as regional theory societies. He has organized three special sessions on music and mathematics at meetings of the American Mathematical Society. He also serves as co-editor of the new Journal of Mathematics and Music, to launch in 2006. As a composer, Peck has written music for orchestral, ensemble, solo, and experimental media. An active cellist, he specializes in twentieth-century music performance, and has appeared in solo and chamber recitals in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and various other cities throughout the United States. He appears frequently in recital with his wife, composer and mezzo-contralto Dawn Williams.
