Julian Shew
Born in China, Shew began to learn music at the age of four from his father and grandfather. He received his music training in China and the United States. Shew earned a diploma from the Jiangsu School of Arts and a Bachelor of Music degree from The Nanjing College of Arts, both in cello performance. Shew attained the Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in orchestral conducting from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and the University of Kansas, respectively. He has worked with conductors and pedagogues such as Leonard Slatkin, Otto-Werner Mueller, Daniel Lewis, Murry Sidlin, and Gunther Schuller, and has further studied conducting at Aspen; Sandpoint; Tanglewood; Yale University; Domain Forget, Canada; and Vienna Conservatory, Austria. Shew has served as music director of a number of orchestras, and has been on the faculty of several institutions. He is also the principal guest conductor of the State Philharmonic of Burgas in Bulgaria and visiting professor of conducting of the Xinghai Conservatory in China. The U.S. Public Radio, Turkish National Radio, Bulgaria National Television, China Central Television, and many other countries' regional stations have broadcasted his live performances. His compact disk with the Sichuan Broadcasting Orchestra titled Son of the PeopleA Symphony by the noted Chinese composer Bao Yuankai has recently been released by the Hong Kong label Hugo with enthusiastic receptions in China.
