Orchestral Studies

Julian Shew (Associate Professor and Director of Orchestral Studies) has been reviewed by critics as "a gifted and charismatic conductor" whose conducting is "imbued with tenderness and grace but at the same time with nerve and vigor." Shew has appeared as guest conductor with repeated engagements with over twenty orchestras and operas in the U.S., Eurpoe, and Asia. He has collaborated with soloists from France, Bulgaria, Germany, China, England, Albania, Turkey, Romania, Russia, Ukraine, and the U.S., including prominent musicians and winners of the Tchaikovsky, Paganini, Cliburn, Carl Flesch, Naumburg, Washington, and other major international competitions.

Born in China, Shew began to learn music at the age of four from his father and grandfather. He received his music training in China and the United States. Shew earned a diploma from the Jiangsu School of Arts and a Bachelor of Music degree from The Nanjing College of Arts, both in cello performance. Shew attained the Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in orchestral conducting from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and the University of Kansas, respectively. He has worked with conductors and pedagogues such as Leonard Slatkin, Otto-Werner Mueller, Daniel Lewis, Murry Sidlin, and Gunther Schuller, and has further studied conducting at Aspen; Sandpoint; Tanglewood; Yale University; Domain Forget, Canada; and Vienna Conservatory, Austria.

Shew has served as music director of a number of orchestras, and has been on the faculty of several institutions. He is also the principal guest conductor of the State Philharmonic of Burgas in Bulgaria and visiting professor of conducting of the Xinghai Conservatory in China. The U.S. Public Radio, Turkish National Radio, Bulgaria National Television, China Central Television, and many other countries' regional stations have broadcasted his live performances. His compact disk with the Sichuan Broadcasting Orchestra titled Son of the People–A Symphony by the noted Chinese composer Bao Yuankai has recently been released by the Hong Kong label Hugo with enthusiastic receptions in China.
