David Smyth
David H. Smyth (Professor and Coordinator of Music Theory). Smyth holds degrees from The Colorado College (B.A., 1975), Cornell University (M.A., 1978), and the University of Texas at Austin (Ph.D., 1985). He has taught at Louisiana State University since 1987, where he has twice been recognized with awards for outstanding teaching (1989, 1999). His research has centered on aspects of large-scale rhythm and meter and analytical studies drawing upon composers' sketches; articles and reviews have appeared in the Journal of Music Theory, Perspectives of New Music, Music Theory Spectrum, Integral, College Music Symposium, Journal of the Arnold Schoenberg Institute, Mitteilungen der Paul Sacher Stiftung, and Beethoven Forum. He recently completed a three-year term as a member of the editorial board for Music Theory Spectrum, and he has been appointed as a member of the Professional Development Committee of the Society for Music Theory. Smyth is a frequent participant at theory conferences, and has presented numerous papers in England, Canada, Ireland, and the US. He has been awarded two research stipends to study manuscript materials in the Igor Stravinsky Collection at the Paul Sacher Foundation in Basel, Switzerland (1996, 2002), and during a sabbatical leave, he made a third visit in 2004. He is currently working on a book on Stravinsky's sketches.
