Expectation within the Classroom

The faculty and staff at LSU’s School of Music want to provide all students with ideal learning environments and the best academic experiences possible. However, the students play a significant role in developing a quality education.

Since students at LSU have come from a variety of backgrounds and schools, each with different policies and procedures, the following list clearly defines what is expected of students in the classroom.

  •  Respect your professor and your fellow students. Arrive to class on time. Walking in and out of class is discourteous and extremely distracting to other students and the professor. In addition, your college career will prepare you for “the real world,” where lateness is not an option with employers.

  • Stay for the entire class period and leave when the professor dismisses class. Packing up your books and belongings before the professor has finished is also a distraction and communicates a lack of respect.

  • Refrain from talking during videos, lectures and films. Active listening aids in retention and increases learning potential.

  • Do not eat in the classroom. It is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to take notes or interact effectively while eating. Arrange your schedule to provide a break to eat.

  • Obtain notes, handouts, and/or assignments from a fellow classmate in the event that you must miss a class. Do not expect your professor to provide you with these materials; it is your responsibility. The professor is also not expected to give you a private lecture on the material you missed.

  • Contact your professor in advance in the event that you must leave class early. Then, try to sit near an exit so that when the appropriate time comes, you will be able to leave as unobtrusively as possible.

  • Think ahead when planning your schedule. LSU typically allows students 10 minutes to get from one class to the next. However, this may not be enough time for you to make it from one side of the campus to another. Pay attention to where and when your classes are scheduled, and make sure you will be able to arrive to all of your classes on time. You may also want to consider mapping out a route before classes begin.
